Reading is like breathing in, writing is like breathing out’
At St. Ann’s School we aim to immerse children in the process of writing.
We want to equip all pupils with the skills, knowledge and understanding they need to become confident and successful thinkers, communicators and writers. We understand that reading and writing are intrinsically linked, meaning that our vision for writing is in tune with our vision and rationale for reading, and the teaching of English as a whole. Inspiring children to read is a moral imperative and their fundamental right. It underpins all learning and secures a good trajectory for personal development, allowing children to understand the world in which they live.
“At any one time, language is a kaleidoscope of styles, genres and dialects.” -David Crystal
Our aim is to develop and embed a love of writing through a rich and varied experience of texts, where children are empowered to exercise freedoms of choice and independence in their writing. Children are supported in developing variety in their writing by focusing on the vocabulary used and the importance of accurate grammar, where tools are taught and used immediately to help children develop fascination around language so that they can manipulate and carefully structure words into sentences.
At St Ann’s School we believe that through creating things of beauty, children experience personal triumph. Our aim is to develop and embed strong teaching and high expectations of handwriting and presentation within the school community. Where handwriting is taught, modelled and celebrated well, children will see, feel and enjoy making progress in their work. Self-esteem and motivation levels will rise and this will positively influence children’s attitudes to learning in other subjects. Good handwriting habits are vital skills that children need to develop in times where writing is still the most-used tool through which learning happens and is evidenced in schools.
